Giraffes can solve math problems.

In addition to their long necks, it’s become evident that giraffes have big brains as well. A team of researchers at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain recently discovered that giraffes have basic math abilities that would give any human kindergartener a run for their money. While these animals struggle with regard to subtraction and multiplication, studies show giraffes can comprehend basic addition.

To reach this hypothesis, researchers presented giraffes with three containers filled with carrots — one of the animals’ favorite snacks. Initially, two containers had two carrots and the third contained three. After showing the containers to the giraffes, the sets of two were combined into one container, and the lids were closed. The researcher then presented two seemingly identical containers to the giraffes, one containing four carrots and the other three. The giraffes were still able to pick the container with the most carrots, suggesting they could discern between quantities and understand simple additive functions.
